Anal Gland Expression

A necessary procedure to prevent discomfort and potential complications caused by gland blockages.

The anal glands (also known as anal sacs) are two small scent glands located on either side of your pet’s rectum. Secretions from the glands are foul smelling and are normally expressed out of the sacs when your pet passes stool. These secretions may also be released in times of stress or fear. Most pets have no issues with their anal glands, but some animals are not able to empty their sacs effectively, and they become impacted and uncomfortable.

Should I drain my dog’s anal glands at home?

If you are concerned that your pet’s glands may be overly full or bothering them, please call the clinic and make an appointment to have them assessed.

If my dog scoots on the carpet, does this mean their anal glands are impacted?

There are numerous symptoms of impacted or infected anal glands. Excessive licking at the rear end and scooting the bottom along the floor are the most common signs. If the irritated glands are not emptied, the impaction may progress to an abscess and the sac may rupture.
